The Olympics are coming and we are getting ready!

*WISH this was MY picture!!

So last year I went to the world market and bought a candy (bar/box) from about 7 different countries. I broke them up and the three kids and I sampled pieces and wiki’d each country! Listening t the national anthem. Seeing where the country was located. Looking at pictures from them. It was so much fun! The kids LOVED it!

January 2011

Well this year my girls are doing 7th grade and there is a bunch of geography so I thought to expand on the candy with the Olympics. So want to pick X amount of countries and Y amount of events and take the two weeks to follow these countries and their people, cook traditional meals, and learn more about them. I MAY have gotten in over my head! I have Russia, Australia (hopefully), Armenia,London, and Nicaragua covered by spme pretty amazing friends! So I can get first hand, NON wiki, sources of info!

Today We started working on the flags from the first 7 countries! They had a really great time. The best part for me was that I feel like I am feeling out the way I am going to want to handle them and schoolwork when we go at this full-time!

I remembered somethings I really already knew. Anna is too quick when she works and misses a lot of details and needs to learn to SLOOOW down! She also does much better, and causes less headaches all around, if she does her work lounging around. Be it the couch with her feet kicked out, on her belly on a bench, or in her bed. I don’t think I will be fighting this when I don’t NEED too! LOL

My Elizabeth on the other hand is a perfectionist. Some of her maps took so long I had to say something! There were some tears on her part as she got frustrated with herself for not doing it well enough! I have to keep reminding her to just do her best and not put so much pressure on herself! She works much better at a desk or table!  Where she can organize her things and keep things where she wants!

When all the fun of crayons was done it was time to learn WHY these countries chose these colors, symbols, and shapes! We were going to use the encyclopedia in book form that we have but the redneck uses it for light reading and I am missing a couple! So to the computer they went. As I watched them look things up they learned some new searching skills, how to recognize which sites will give them the information that they want by reading the internet address first, and that there were so many similarities to how countries chose their flag designs!

The Competition.

We will have a world map in or living room. Along with a flag for each country we are learning about. There isn’t room for DOUBLE flags so the vote is on! 1-7 flags. Pick A or B. Not all A’s=one girl 😉 The flag from each country that wins will hang! Comment here or on fb! It will go till midnight Monday! Thank you SO much for joining us in this!

I think what you are doing is awesome! I will soon scour the “international” aisle at my local grocery stores in an attempt to try this with my kiddos. Thanks for the ideas :o)

Took my job very seriously and even viewed enlarged photo. Some were so close I had to choose the one that was not out of lines or not colored all the way. Please tell the girls great job and they look like they are having way to much FUN! 🙂
